The Emotional Rollercoaster of Homebuying
When we decided to purchase our first home, we were thrilled. We had envisioned our new life in the neighborhood, spent countless hours discussing layouts, and even started designing our space.
However, after we received the accepted offer amid stiff competition—EIGHT other buyers—I found myself racing to deliver the deposit check. I expected jubilation, but instead, I encountered a different reality.
My husband was in a state of shock, lying on the cold tile floor at my parents’ house, seemingly speechless. This was not the celebratory moment we had imagined. Was it regret? No. It was the weight of reality sinking in. We had accomplished our goal, but it was overwhelming. I reminded him that we had meticulously planned for this—after many showings, thorough inspections, and discussions with family and friends. Eventually, his initial shock transformed into satisfaction and joy. If you ask him today, he will tell you it was one of the best decisions we ever made!

Understanding the Shock
In the world of real estate, it’s common for buyers to feel a mix of emotions post-purchase. The initial shock can often be misinterpreted as regret. However, it’s essential to distinguish between these feelings.
In 2016 I went skydiving for the first time, I felt a rush of panic and regret as I stood at the open door of the plane, despite having planned this adventure for months if not years. Jumping out was terrifying, but ultimately, it was exhilarating and one of my best decisions. Similarly, while the weight of buying a home can feel daunting, it’s often just the natural response to making such a significant commitment for the first time!

What If You Truly Regret It?
If you find yourself genuinely regretting your home purchase, it’s crucial to understand your options. Unlike returning a sweater, you can’t simply “return” a house, but there are steps to address your feelings.
Reflect on why you feel regret. Is it related to financial concerns or the property itself? Understanding the root cause can help you assess your situation. Talk to your real estate agent or a financial advisor. They can provide insights into your options, whether it’s renting out the property, selling, or simply making adjustments to your new life.
